Cloud computing has become a technology buzzword in recent years, and for good reasons. For businesses and organizations of all sizes, the technology offers greater flexibility, enhances collaboration between employees, improves efficiency and much more. Analysts estimate that 90 percent of organizations will adopt cloud services by 2022.
Despite the tremendous advantages it offers, cloud computing faces a number of challenges as it continues to expand. Building on its industry-leading SSD technology, Samsung’s Memory Division has developed three innovative solutions to help the technology continue to grow and fulfill its vast potential.
Due to the size and complexity of cloud infrastructures, technical failure ranks as one of the major causes of downtimes. Minor glitches can snowball into system-wide problems that require lengthy maintenance times.
Samsung’s fail-in-place (FIP) technology reduces the risk of interruptions in SSD operations even when problems occur at the chip level. To mitigate against the risks and costs of outages, the industry’s cutting-edge technology continuously scans for faulty chips in the SSD. If an error occurs, the software maintains continuous operations by activating error-handling algorithms which transport data from the problematic chip to functioning components.
As the world’s data demand continues to grow and shift, flexibility, speed and consistency are key for service providers to stay ahead in the increasingly competitive market.
In response to the ever-changing technological landscape, Samsung developed a SSD virtualization technology to help service providers enhance their adaptability. With the virtualization software, a single SSD can be divided into a maximum of 64 smaller SSDs. It also allows SSDs to carry out virtualized tasks traditionally assigned to server CPUs. This means data centers can expand their services to more users and boost capacity without additional hardware investment, improving their overall efficiency.
Increasing the speed of SSDs raises the challenge of maintaining accuracy in reading and verifying data. Using big data analytics to monitor circuit patterns, Samsung’s V-NAND machine learning technology delivers data reliability in SSDs operating at ultra-high speed. By striking the harmonized balance between speed and reliability, the technology enables service providers to offer storage performance fit for current and future data demands.
With the recent launch of PCIe Gen4-based PM1733 and PM1735 SSDs, Samsung is setting a new standard for high-performance storage solution. Embedded with the company’s three core software technologies, the two new SSDs can offer up to twice the speed of their previous generations. Read and write speeds of the PM1735 can reach up to 1,450,000 IOPS and 260,000 IOPS respectively, while the PM1733 provides single and dual-port options for diverse server and storage applications.
With the arrival of 5G and advances in AI, cloud computing looks set to be a key technology that determines and drives growth. Samsung plans to expand its cutting-edge memory software technologies to a wider range of SSDs to help more organizations and enterprises harness the power of future technological innovations.
